Kala USA Revelator - 'HUMMINGBIRD' Alex Beds Sinker Redwood Custom Tenor Ukulele w/Gigbag 40841225

It is ridiculously self indulgent to run a Ukulele Store and proclaim something your signature model... I am very self aware that it is just a little bit weird. However, I am absolutely blessed to have tremendous personal history with the Kala Revelator and even far back to the very first prototype Ukuleles Pete Howlett produced of these in 2017.

It's come a very long way... with the off set, tear dropped soundhole and slim body design far exceeding even Pete Howletts wildest dreams when he first showed them off to me at our old Southbourne store nearly a decade ago. For 3 years now, the Kala Revelator has been the most prized and loved high end instrument we stock and sell at Southern Ukulele Store with our love for the one-off custom models throughout 2024 & 2025 yielding a huge array of different size and tonewood options. A Revelator for every genre... I personally found myself absolutely besotted with a custom run of Sinker Redwood and Mahogany Tenor Ukuleles that fleetingly took ownership of. That special run of 6 ukuleles ended up being sent all over the world and Kala themselves approached me asking me if I loved it enough to put my name to it? - It was a no brainer for me and I quickly worked with Marcos at Kala's Petaluma Custom shop to make the small tweaks I knew players like myself were hoping to see on the Revelator.

Firstly, Sinker Redwood is a prized tonewood for Ukuleles and Guitars offering up the same warmth and projection as other tonewoods like Spruce/Cedar but my research and findings taught me that it will rarely sound better than it can on the slimline design of the Revelator. They sound absolutely massive! Thick, creamy, expressive, articulate and actually just addictive as I have found recently with my own version of this Ukulele. I selected the wood sets used for each of these instruments myself.

Secondly, I thought it was important to add side fret markers and at the very least position markers to the front of the fingerboard. Not being able to look down and see where you are on the fingerboard with a passing glance had been something I noticed my own Revelators before this model. The Tenor 'Hummingbird model' features oval shaped maple wooden markers as a loving nod to the past Petaluma Kala USA Ukuleles built pre-Revelator era. 

I have also declared myself on video hundreds of times a complete sucker for cream binding and cream buttons on machineheads and those vintage looking cosmetic details produce 'in my opinion' the first Revelators that look brand new and completely vintage inspired at the same time. The Grover 9NW tuners are a 14:1 Ratio tuner that is lightweight, simple and reliable and it holds the delicate balance and lightweight feel of the Revelators just as it should... an upgrade without going crazy for the sake of having something that looked regal!

Finally, Marcos worked to incorporate my own Hummingbird logo to the 7th fret of the fingerboard. Inlaid in maple, I wanted to make it as tasteful and easy to miss as possible whilst still being something you can gawp at and enjoy every single time. The Hummingbird logo was created for me by Southern Ukulele Stores very own Phil when we used to perform together as a duo called Hummingbird and the Crow.

Quite simply, I would never put my name on something I didn't believe in and to me, this Revelator is iconic in its own right. I am not usually someone who would stick with one instrument for more than a couple of years but I want this instrument to be with me whenever I perform or create music for the rest of my life! I hope that I can share that joy with as many of you as possible with this model?
