The new Invictus tenor ukulele has that bombastic nature that all Rebel instruments share. Like their standard range, the sound just seems to eagerly leap out with the smallest of strums or picks with great clarity, and there is impressive clarity when strummed very hard.

Cedar is a great wood to create an even frequency response and a nice warm projecting sound, and the way this instrument has been built maximises the potential of the top to fill the room with sound. The impressive amount of sustain evident is really only achieved by the lightest, stiffest and most carefully built ukuleles around.

So, a proper treat for the ears, and also for the eyes. I have to admit to looking up tabaek when I saw the spec as it is not something familiar to me, but on this uke it looks simply fabulous, with lots of figuring on show to complement the lovely honeyed colour of the wood. Knowing how the wood on the back and sides of a uke helps to shape the sound, I can only hope that tabaek features a little more often in future!
