Fanner Ocelot Baritone Electric Ukulele w/gigbag - Midnight Blue
The rise of solid body ukuleles has been sudden and extremely exciting... Flight and Risa have established these designs as viable and modern alternatives to the electric guitar and have captured the heart of thousands of players and Fanner are established as well with an audience worldwide that seemingly can't recommend them enough.
The Ocelot baritone electric ukuleles is made in Cape Town, South Africa by the Fanner brothers offering a familiar 1950's guitar design but with a more compact and aesthetically trimmed body and a powerful sound coming from the hand wound, single coil pickups.
Fanner are very proud that most parts are produced in house for these ukuleles with the exception of the pickups and machine heads.
This Ocelot is a dual pickup baritone ukulele with a slightly reduced baritone 19'' scale length (still tuned DGBE) not unlike the Jazzmistress models. Along with Fanner's hand wound single coil pickups, the Ocelot also features a phase inversion switch, differing from the Jazzmistress. On an electric ukulele with multiple pickups, the phase switch inverts the polarity of one pickup's signal. When this signal is combined with another pickup's normal (in-phase) signal, the positive and negative parts of the sound waves partially cancel each other out (destructive interference), especially in the midrange frequencies. The result is a distinctive sound characterized as thin and "nasally", having a scooped midrange, possessing less low end, causing a volume drop compared to the in-phase setting. This unique sound is often used for specific sound effects or to achieve a particular vintage tone.
The Midnight Blue finish reflects this vintage tone with an equally vintage burst, a wenge neck and fingerboard, 34mm nut width and 48cm scale length. The bridge saddles are adjustable, and the nut is hand carved. It's a machine! We love it.
Listing shows actual instrument you will receive. The finish on these ukuleles is about 9/10. Part of what makes these so affordable for a single luthier built instrument is the more rustic elements of the finish. Perfection is lovely but the bespoke singular build of this instrument at such a great price does mean the instrument has a more lived in look and feel.
