Flight Iris Calantas Solid Top Mahogany Back And Sides Tenor Ukulele w/gigbag
Derivative of the highly popular Flight Nighthawk model, when the Iris first arrived at the Southern Ukulele Store, it solidified its position as the most affordable alternative to the mid-intermediate range Flight ukuleles. Since then it has been a part of the foundation that gave birth to the supremely popular Carabao lite models.
The Iris Calantas tenor ukulele is, in a nutshell, a more stripped back and even more affordable version of the Iris Tinta models. It gets its name from the wood used for the top, which is one we needed to spend a little time researching here at the store. Visually Calantas is similar to redwood used for the very popular UR-71 models by Baton Rouge, but this South East Asia hardwood differs slightly in that it projects with serious volume. It's an ideal model if you are someone who finds they can't hear themselves at a busy uke group, with its clear and crisp tone cutting through very well. Instead of a high gloss finish we find a natural satin for the Calantas, and in place of the turquoise rosette and fret dots the Calantas features more modest looking but equally desirable white mother of pearl inlays.
Beside these differences, the spec is the same as the Tinta models, including the ever important 38mm nut width as well as a satin finished neck for a smoother playing experience and the upgraded lighter weight bracing adding way more sustain than you might expect, usually reserved for their higher end models.
The Flight Iris Calantas tenor ticks a big box in the ukulele world. If you are looking for a great first ukulele, or looking for a tenor that offers a little more bang for your buck then the Calantas should certainly be up for consideration, it even includes a Flight branded gigbag.
