Here is another excellent tenor ukulele from the fairly newly established (certainly in the UK) Uma ukulele brand. The quirky Pulse series went over very well when first announced, but this baby tenor model is a lot more traditional looking, with frets that are right angles to the edge of the fretboard, not arranged in fan patterns!

In the hand, this small tenor ukulele feels great at the price. It really does give models from larger brands a real run for their money. Uma are distributed by the excellent Stones Music in the UK. Mark, the owner there, is really hot on quality checking and he even gives them a bit of a setup before sending them to us. If you asked us to put a name to some of best value sub £150 models, then this would have to be on the list. A serious amount of instrument for the money.

The concert body and tenor neck combo is one that works very nicely indeed. The sound is sprightly, with great clarity, and lends itself to fingerpicking very nicely. Some of the cheaper laminate models from other brands can sound a little less capable when picked. These lower cost models sound nice and smooth and mellow for a strum-a-long, but lacking a bit of responsiveness and liveliness when fingerpicked. Not so with the baby tenor.

This Uma ukulele sounds brilliant. No doubt the longer tenor string length just gives the extra power and response over pure concert scale ukes when you are fingerpicking, and the concert ukulele body size helps make the sound crisp and well defined. The sound just leaps out! And, the bevelled armrest makes if a joy to hold. No sore arms for you!

Can you tell that we really like it?
