The uBass market has become very saturated, but Kala's solid body SB-BK-FS 5 string fretted ukulele bass really stands out.
Pulling inspiration from the original California series uBass, the SB-BK-FS is a whole new take on the ukulele bass from Kala. It features a sleek off-set body shape which is contoured for balance and comfort, finished in a classy and classic jet black gloss. The 22 pocketed frets and 23.5" scale give you plenty of room to manoeuvre around yet it is still compact enough to easily travel with. The tone is thick and meaty thanks to the classic passive split-coil pickup.
This is a rare 5 string model with an added low B string. That means the tuning is BEADG - the pickup is a special designed Kala humbucker to help with the extra deep frequencies.
The tuning is the same as a standard bass guitar or ukulele bass in EADG and it utilises traditional roundwound bass strings for a short scale. In the hand the tension feels sharp and immediate which is often missing from ukulele basses, and the addition of an easily accessible spoke wheel trussrod adjuster is a welcome feature. We are really impressed with the latest uBass offering from Kala, it even comes with a padded gigbag.
