Coast Ukuleles are in the top 5% of instruments I have ever played in my 16+ years in the musical instrument business. Kawai as a builder is a warm, gentle, giving and radiant human being and this comes to life in every instrument that leaves the Coast workshop. We bonded with Kawai in June 2022 over an extremely deep conversation about the deeper meanings of life and perhaps more importantly ukulele tonewoods. We agreed that modern thermal cured woods are an incredible feat of engineering and shared a love of mango and maple as exemplary uke tonewoods.
Number #86 is another example of Coast at their best. A torrefied AAA spruce top with quilted maple back and sides. A slightly longer 18'' XL tenor scale. It has a simple waterbased satin finish and an understated rosette. The absolutely stunning maple/koa Honu mosaic inlaid into the headstock is a true work of art and sets off against the rustic woods elsewhere on the body.
Torrefied spruce is a kiln baked wood. Premium wood sets are baked over a long period of time until the molecular structure of the wood resembles the wood structure of vintage wood sets. This spruce top has the strength of a new spruce top but the age and timbre of a 100 year old piece of wood.
The back and sides are premium quilted maple which is a lovely rich and absorbent wood that filters out a lot of lower mid or boomy frequencies and gives a filtered, sweet sound. Similar in many ways to koa but with arguably a more dynamic response under your fingers when you play.
