Choose the Southern Ukulele Store to supply synthetic gut and silk 900® extra hard tension guitar strings from Aquila.

We first discovered these strings way back in 2012 when researching suitable strings for a Kanile'a GL6 guitalele and I have never found a better string for tuning your Guitalele to standard guitar tuning. These work well on Guileles as well that need to be strung A to A with good tension.

Until the middle of the 20th-century guitar strings were made up exclusively of gut for the trebles and wound strings on a silk core for the basses. The acoustic performance of this kind of setup was very different from that of the current sets. It was characterised by a marked timbre and brilliance of the most acute strings in gut (certainly superior to nylon and in some ways, for the treble, more similar to that of PVDF or carbon).

Basses, on the other hand, were of nature exquisitely vocal, i.e. presenting a less bright and less persistent sonority than the current bass strings wound on a nylon core and more focused on the fundamental.

This set of Aquila classical guitar strings was conceived for one grade of tension only. It consists of gut-coloured supernylgut® trebles, with a rectified surface exactly as it’s made on gut strings, adopting the representative mean diameters as indicated by Pujol in his method “Escuela Razonada de la Guitarra” of 1934.

Basses have a silver-plated copper winding over special multifilament core, that we call ‘Rayon’, and are specifically balanced between metal and core in order to achieve the same texture of sound found in the original silk-wound strings. These Aquila strings have extra hard tension.
