With everything that's happened this year, it feels like decades ago that I first saw the launch of Kala's premier exotic range in January at the 2020 NAMM show. We've had our first delivery of the new Kala concert ukuleles this October and they were certainly worth the wait! They're a real step in the right direction for
Kala as they start to offer some of their deluxe appointments at a more affordable price.
The KA-PX-MACA-C is a lightweight but stiff and resonant laminate macawood
concert ukulele. If you like the brighter and more springy sounding ukuleles in the Kala range like the ziricote series then you will love this. It can be mellow, it can be bold... honestly, this concert offers so much more than the price suggests.
Plus, the new premier exotic range has some subtle, effective upgrades that are a big leap for Kala. Most noticeably, they're using Graphtech Ratio tuners on these ukes. The back facing geared tuner weighs a fraction of Kala's usual geared tuners. They also give a more regal, traditional ukulele appearance.
The other aesthetic upgrades are the chamfered edge to keep the instrument comfier in your arms for longer. Kala have also returned to rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. Many of us have been hopeful this would be possible since CITES placed restrictions on importing/exporting rosewood back in 2016. With these rules now relaxing; the premier exotic ukuleles really are a fantastic package.
