This Kamaka tenor ukulele is a superb piece of craftsmanship that builds on the basis of the HF-3D deluxe koa Kamaka uke. It adds a beautiful solid spruce top, rosewood binding with rope pattern purfling and soundhole rosette. The sound defined a little more crisply by the ebony fretboard and bridge, giving the sound an extra little bit of bite, clarity and sustain up the fretboard.
The spruce top is a very different beast to the koa topped HF-3D. The sound although crisp on the attack is full and rounded, with real depth, power and presence across the range. It works really, really well with a low G string.
For an absolute do anything tenor ukulele this really has to be one to consider. The koa models are naturally brighter sounding - and extremely lovely in their own way. If the koa HF-3D is the ultimate sweet and dreamy traditional Hawaiian instrument then the HF-3DS Is the modern sounding, clearer, louder and caffeinated younger sibling.
This instrument is worth every penny, and a few more!
Owing to the way that Kamaka buff their instruments, under very close inspection you may notice small micro polishing marks in the gloss. And because the gloss is applied on open pore wood, without grain filler, expect some very small anomalies like pits and bubbles. These are very brand typical, and unavoidable!

There's no need for us to explain the history and tradition of Kamaka instruments to you, other than to say that since 1916 they've been making seriously beautiful instruments. They're very, very good at it.
