These Rebel soprano ukuleles sound and feel brilliant. These ukuleles are very modern feeling and looking in a way that reminds us of the
AnueNue's. They also have a touch of Imua/Kiwaya/Takumi's traditional body styling but with a nice slick feeling neck. We shouldn't be surprised how good these ukes are given that Rebel are the manufacturers of KoAloha's opio line - truly these ukes seem to take some of the popular styling of other brands and put them together to make something new and extremely exciting.
The Rebel solid mango soprano double creme has the same beautiful, sweet sound with some really smooth highs and a nice responsive bass when you hit the open C strings as the creme brulee model but with a more traditional thickness body. The extra depth makes this ukulele even more
concert ukulele like than it's sibling.
The first time I opened the gigbag to try one of these, I actually found myself playing open chords like C and F and just listening for several seconds as the note rang out to its conclusion. It is extremely rare for a new
soprano to have such a refined sound. This ukulele successfully handles a confident strum without any sibilant undertones. In many ways it actually sounds much more like a concert and if you close your eyes or look away when it is being played; you could be forgiven for thinking that you are hearing koa, such is the bubbliness of this little champion.
Much like the KoAloha mango ukuleles, this Rebel soprano ukulele is helping to establish mango as an authentic tonewood destined to play a big role in the future of ukulele manufacturing. Certainly, right now you would be hard pressed to find something that could outclass The Rebel or KoAloha opio ukuleles at the same price. The mango they are using is gorgeous!
Phil and I fell madly in love with Rebel at the 2019 NAMM show and we were delighted to be able to share the Rebel experience with you. There isn't a bad or mediocre ukulele in the range - just well made ukes you will want to play every time you open the bag.
Sure, the bag is a bit flamboyant and won't be to everyone's taste - but at least you'll always know where you put your Rebel!
