Alex headed to the Kala facility to inspect the 20th anniversary models and they are absolutely fantastic! He hand selected each model to ensure we got the cream of the crop, leaving a handful of nice ones for our friends in other stores to hold in their own stock. The very few limited edition models he chose are truly stunning.

Kala really took huge steps to make these special ukuleles. The turn of the century body shape with the tightly pinched waist and flush neck are a doff of the cap to the ukulele’s earliest roots in Madeira, Portugal, and the luthiers who pioneered the instrument.

This figure 8 shape built from all solid koa ties the vintage look, and Hawaiian heritage together beautifully, with the addition of a nuñez style rope inlay soundhole rosette similar to that of the old Ohana SK-28 models. Not to compare however, these Kala's are a world apart with a feather light, almost petite construction. They are much lighter than any Kala soprano we have ever had and offer premium features beyond that of the Hawaiian koa. The tuners, although not Gotoh's are very similar to the Planetary's, adding to the vintage look but with gearing for modern precision tuning.

The deluxe variation for the figure 8 anniversary model features a handful of aesthetic upgrades to the standard F8, with the nuñez style rope rosette inlay also reflected in the front binding, and a very subtle back binding. It also has a classy gold finish added to the tuners.

It's the little touches that also elevates these limited edition models, for example the custom headstock emblem depicting a motif taking inspiration from Bill Soberanes Wristwrestling Statue in downtown Petaluma, which is echo'd on the red material lined, deluxe padded gigbag.

20 years of Kala has been expertly bookended in these anniversary models, leaving a chapter marker for the company to be proud of as we move into the next quarter of our century.
