Kamaka HF-4DS Deluxe Solid Spruce/Koa Baritone Ukulele #210082
No need to explain the history and tradition of Kamaka instruments, other than to say that since 1916 they've been making seriously beautiful instruments. They're very, very good at it.
This Kamaka baritone ukulele is made from solid Spruce and Koa and is a superb piece of craftsmanship. It takes the HF-4 standard Kamaka baritone, and adds the Spruce top, with beautiful rosewood binding and rope pattern purfling, soundhole rosette, Ebony fretboard and bridge, and a gloss over open pore finish.
The Spruce top is the punchiest and most immediate sounding of the 3 available HF-3D models - it has a very quick and crisp response compared to the Cedar, which is more mellow and rounded. If you want the ultimate in clarity and presence, certainly in the mid to high range, then the Spruce top is an excellent choice. It sounds a little more contemporary than the more traditional sounding Koa.
The gloss on open pore finish can result in pits and runs, where the gloss sinks into the grain and other featurs in the wood. So, do not expect cosmetic perfection in this respect. The lack of grain filler really helps these instruments sound as clear and open as they do, so the minute cosmetic detail is sacrificed for a very good reason.
