tenor ukulele may look familiar because it takes inspiration from a couple of discontinued Kanile'a models that we absolutely loved here. It features a gorgeous figured sitka spruce top that is feather light to the touch and it is paired with some truly deluxe koa back and sides. The spruce Kanile'a are currently using is a much higher grade than used in previous years and although that is reflected slightly in the price; you really do get some of the best spruce on Earth.
There is something distinctly modern and old fashioned about this model. It sounds so crisp and precise with a sweet bubbly edge as the notes decay. This is a practical high end instrument that can find its feet with any style of play with minimal fuss. If you play blues that spruce top has got you covered but if you want to sound mellow and full bodied it has the right kind of tonality to reign itself in with a light stroke of the strings.
This model also features the sand inlays that are missed on standard 2019 models whilst retaining the modern TRU-R bracing. These definitely adds to the lightness of the top and the confident way in which it rings out.
Just in case you missed the look of the koa top - that large matched koa soundhole rosette with the black plastic binding is to die for!
Well done Kanile'a - as always you hit it out the park and bettered our sky high expectations of what your workshop could produce.
