Kala KA-20TH-KOA-TXL 20th Anniversary Solid Koa Top African Mahogany XL Tenor Ukulele w/gigbag #18

This 20th anniversary XL tenor ukulele from Kala is one of only about forty available (of the whole range in the UK). Be quick if you want to own this piece of ukulele history. 

The KA-20TH-KOA-TXL Xl tenor holds a similar space as the Kala contour series when it comes to price range, but in the hand feels like a far more premium instrument, closer to something like an Ohana Custom USA or even dare I say a Kamaka deluxe model.

Using the select Hawaiian koa top is a big part of what makes these limited edition models special. Kala clearly took their time with each and every ukulele in the range. Being bound to a solid mahogany back with abalone and rosewood reflected in the soundhole rosette and up the fretboard adds to the premium aesthetic, as well as the gorgeously ergonomic rosewood comfort edge.

The mahogany neck has a satin finish for a super smooth feel, and is capped with gold tuners on one of the prettiest Kala headstocks ever, with the same abalone binding used for the purfling and an iconic ebony inlay paying homage to the Californian poppy.

The XL variation of the 20th anniversary range is similar to the standard tenor but with a few significant differences. The bottom bout is wider, not unlike a Kanile'a super tenor giving more fullness to the sound, but interestingly Kala have opted to give a little more scale length to the XL. With an extra inch or so of string length the KA-20TH-KOA-TXL lends itself to many styles.

This ukulele works in standard GCEA tuning for sure, but with a slightly higher string tension than a standard tenor but would also handle a set of high tension DGBE strings. Where this ukulele really comes into it's own however would be taking GCEA strings and tuning them somewhere in between standard and baritone tuning. This unique orientation captures the feel of a tenor, but the warmth and soul of a baritone.

Much like the soprano models, the KA-20TH-KOA-TXL features a custom deluxe padded gigbag with a sweet little patch echoing the poppy headstock inlay.

20 years of Kala has been expertly bookended in these anniversary models, leaving a chapter marker for the company to be proud of as we move into the next quarter of our century.
