Tenor Ukuleles

Tenor Ukulele

Overall, the tenor ukulele is probably number three in popularity behind concert and standard ukes. It was also the third of the four types of ukulele to be created. Soon after the concert uke was made in the 1920s, the tenor ukulele was added with the intention being to create a larger and louder version of the concert uke. At 26 inches (66cm) in total length and with a 17 inch (43cm) scale length, it is 3 inches longer than a concert uke in total and a scale length which is 2 inches greater.

Because the tenor uke produces such a deep, loud and rich sound, it is the most popular ukulele amongst entertainers. In fact, some of the most famous ukulele players in the world (James Hill and Jake Shimabukaro for example) are famed for their mastery over the tenor. You can find 4, 6 and 8 string versions of the tenor ukulele. Expect your tenor to be made from Koa Wood, cedar or spruce.

There is some debate when it comes to tuning tenor ukes. Should you tune to high G or low G? When you tune to a high G, the close harmony chords synonymous with ukuleles are created. However, if you tune to a low G, you instantly increase the overall range of the uke. This leads to a fuller sound with your chords and is ideal for solo playing.

As tenor ukuleles are more expensive than sopranos or concerts, it is hard to find anything for less than £50. However, it is possible to purchase a Makala tenor for around £50 though expect to pay extra for a uke with a case. If your cheap tenor ukulele hunt is unsuccessful, the Lanikai LU-21T can be yours for around £80. There are various types of tenor ukulele, find one that suits your needs and budget online at Southern Ukulele Store.
